A downloadable game for Windows

Old school boomer shooters and roguelikes collide in Rogue Shooter Redux. An unofficial fan remake of the original Rogue Shooter by Nate Bradley that fixes and enhances many aspects of the cult classic. Checkout the Steam topic for more information on the project and it's history.

Original Description

First-person shooters and roguelikes have finally tied the knot! Their offspring, ROGUE SHOOTER, tasks you with navigating a space station run amok. Blast aliens and kick robots in the face as you traverse each level; collecting weapons and gaining experience along the way. How far will you go when death lurks around every corner? Will you reach the 100th level and destroy the source of the station’s corruption? Probably not, but it’s worth a try.

Features

  • 100 random floors to fight through on a space station in chaos.
  • 26 classic and bizarre weapons to collect, including a shotgun trident!
  • 21 strange and unique enemies to combat, including carnivorous plants.
  • 18 different types of items and gadgets to help you along the way.
  • 8 collectable resources you can use to craft new items and supplies.
  • An unfolding story told through logs and characters you will meet.

Redux_0.9.7.zip 90 MB

Install instructions

Unzip folder before playing. You might also need to install the Visual Studio 2012 C++ Redistributable to get the game running. You can download the file here.

Unlocking Full Version

For legal reasons, the redux is in free "shareware" demo mode by default. To unlock the full version you need to own the original Rogue Shooter on Steam and transfer a file from the original to the Redux to unlock the full version.

Steps:

  1. Run Rogue Shooter Redux at least once.
  2. Install Rogue Shooter on Steam and run it at least once.
  3. Right-click on Rogue Shooter in Steam and select Manage > Browse local files.
  4. Copy the file named "rsdata" found in the Rogue Shooter Steam folder.
  5. Paste this file into the %LOCALAPPDATA%/Rogue_Shooter_Redux/ folder.
  6. Run Rogue Shooter Redux again to unlock the full game.

Hi, i'm really interested in the remake but there seems no legal way to buy the original game in my country (Argentina) as in steam only the demo can be downloaded is there any workaround for this?

Thanks for your interest and wanting to support the original dev ❤️. Unfortunately the game isn't available in all regions, so I created a workaround for just that situation.

Open %localappdata%\Rogue_Shooter_Redux\settings.json in a text editor and change "demo_mode" value from true to false, then save the file and restart the game.

Because of this, this is the only way at all I can play this game. Thank you so much.

wait, game maker? that would explain why the owner of the game would not update the game any more. because today version of game maker is the dumb sub payment system

Actually, it was abandon years before the subscription model happened in 2014 and was created in the ancient GameMaker 8.1. Redux is using GameMaker Studio 1.4, as I got it on sale and was never interested in GameMaker Studio 2.

man game maker 8.1 reminded me of my post-high school days when the worst thing to worry about was the encomny going to the dogs.

but man I hated then game maker become a subscription services just put a price tag for me to buy it out right!

At least with Unity (my current main engine) they only charge you if your rich. But the completely free and open source Godot is looking better and better to me each day. 🙂

the only down side of godot is not as easy to use as game maker, I just wish they make a new VSL they anyone can use

Oh boy. These comments about GameMaker and Unity's payment schemes aged well...😅

For once in my life, being slow was actually helpful. Ha! Because GameMaker ain't seem so bad now, and Godot and/or custom engines are kind of looking very attractive to me now...

Thanks a lot for this, you brought this game a much needed rework!

game maker?

Unfortunately yes, as that's what the original game was created with. However, I've managed to improve performance greatly in the redux, including adding an adjustable framerate cap (original game was locked to 30!).

There still seems to be some wonkiness here and there that I'm still trying to iron out, but I'm currently working on the next major update, which should further improve the game. 🤞

good luck)

Thanks! 😁

would love to see this done, take your time with it, but ya when I played it it was a solid-made game. but sadly as time past more assets flippers took over steam

Thanks. Hoping to get the full release out early next year! 🤞

Yeah, lots of junk on Steam nowadays. But with support from kind people like you, it's still possible to rise above all that noise. So here's hoping you also like the new original game I'm currently developing for Steam. 🙂

So, if I install the original, how does the Redux tap into it?

Hello there!

Unfortunately, you have to manually transfer a file over from the original to the redux app data folder to unlock the full version. Exact steps are explained in the Steam forums.  I looked into automating this process for users, but I couldn't find a workable solution. 😞

This file is just used to verify ownership of the original game. It's not actually required to run the redux.

I did this because I didn't feel comfortable just giving away the whole remake for free, when it includes assets from the original game, which is still being sold.

Very nostalgic playing this again :)

I hope there will be an option to switch back to the original soundtrack from the holiday related soundtracks

(+2)

The holiday stuff is only active through the month of December. However, I plan to add a "humbug" mode in the future to disable it all. For now you can disable the Christmas music by deleting/moving/renaming the "xmas" music folder. Or disable all holiday cheer by manually changing your system clock.

I see. Thank you for the solution. The original soundtrack is drilled into my head so it's hard to play without it.

Hello, is the game really dark or is it just me?

(+1)

You probably entered a floor with low power. These are special random floors with lower visibility. Finding the torch/flashlight item can help mitigate this. You can also find floors with poisonous gas and radar interference too.

That seems to be the case. I think it would help to put the brightness levels similar to the original.

(+1)

I'll see what I can do about letting the player adjust brightness, since I know this can be an issue in many games.

Hi, Do i download the steam demo or is there a full version of Rogue Shooter? I only see the demo in the steam page

(2 edits) (+2)

If you cannot find the full version on Steam then that means it's unavailable in your region, sorry! Original developer has vanished so no way to fix this. But the Steam demo should also work due to a tiny oversight. Just don't tell anybody! 😉

Thank you!

this is really cool.

Thank you! Much of the credit here goes to the original developer though. I'm just trying to improve upon the design some in the redux version.
